Spending time with Bambi

Written by Kristin

This past weekend "the girls" headed out to Carla's cabin in Buffalo Point. We had good times, played some Beans, some Sequence, some Ticket to Ride, ate, drank, and were generally merry. We also, once again, had visitors of the animal type - deers, to be exact. The most tamest deers in the world frequent the Loewen cabin in hopes of picking up a few scraps from the dinner table. We were MORE than happy to oblige and gladly fed the deer some carrots. It was incredible how close we got to these beautiful animals - they even ate right from our hands!

Here are a few pictures of the deer and our times together (the last one is of a momma deer with her little ones feeding - so precious!):

Uptown Girl...

Written by Kristin

Well, my mom is officially an owner of a digital camera. She's been talking about getting one for MONTHS now.

This is the woman who needs me to write down instructions on how to turn on the computer.
Another set of instructions on now to get on the internet.
Another set of instructions on how to log into her email.
And yes, yet another set of instructions on how to send me an email.
The process usually takes her about an hour. IF she gets my email address right. Kristin@theuniversity.canada.ca ?
kristin@yahoo.hotmail.gmail.org.cn ?
mydaughter@winnipeg.mb.sympatico.booyakasha.com ?
Oi vey

Then she got a cell phone (aka - inheritied my old one). She's actually gotten pretty good at using it. I taped the instructions to the actual phone. The only issue is she calls "just for fun" and always says "guess what? I'm calling from my CELL PHONE!" Little things excite her (like mother like daughter I guess).

And now the digital camera. I could not believe she wanted one. My mom once got a roll of film developed that had 2 Christmases on it. A roll of film that spanned almost 2 years. I says to her, "mom, you NEVER take pictures - do you really need a digital camera????"

Of course she does. Sigh....
So, we went to Future Shop and found a perfect camera for her. Simple, basic, no bells and whistles..... and she loves it. She strutted out of Future Shop singing Billy Joel's Uptown Girl. She was so happy and proud of herself. It was actually very cute, she was super excited.

We then drove to Walms to buy the accessories. Every few minutes she'd say (to no one in particular) "I have a digital camera....wow...".

She spent part of this evening taking pictures of me and dad. She spent the other part of the evening posing with it. In front of a mirror - to make sure she looked cool holding it. I even had to teach her how to hold it so she didn't look like an old lady holding a camera.

I am making a bet with myself that she will forget how to use it by tomorrow. And I will get a call at work asking me how it works. And she will, of course, be calling from her CELL PHONE!

I love you mom!

Ok - I'm SUUUUUUUUUUUPER happy right now.

I sang in the Winnipeg Music Festival yesterday and placed 1st in the Musical Theatre category!

FIRST!!!

I sang "The Wizard and I" from Wicked.

I know it's nice to just sing in the festival (as I have for years) - but DAMN does it feel good to win!

And M'Sooz totally suprised me - she came into town early from UpNo and was able to be there for me while I performed! Thanks m'friend :)

So, THIS is what it feels like to hit rock bottom...

Written by Kristin

Alright.

This MUST end.

I don't know how much more of this I can take.

My week started off ok.... by Wednesday, things were headed downhill. I'm not usually one to complain in excess, but I'm going to do it right now and no one can stop me.

Things that have made me upset/cry in the past 72 hours:

- Having family issues..... sort of annoying this week. More annoying than in other weeks.
- It's freaking -45 degrees (celcius!!!) outside. Not good on my car.
- I broke my parent's kitchen sink.

"Man, that sucks", you say...

- I lost one of my favourite earrings.... due to the heavy coats and scarves I'm wearing right now, I'm sure.
- I got some troubling medical news..... sucks being a girl.
- I am having the "I'm alone on Valentine's Day" blues. For whatever reason it seems to be heightened right now. I've had more Bridget Jones moments in the past few days than I care to mention.

"For real, what else can happen to this girl?", you must be asking...

- Went to a single's mixer thing tonight....... and ran into my ex-boyfriend who I haven't seen in 1 1/2 years. How much fun it was to see him talking and chatting and picking up girls. It's like someone wrote down my worst nightmare and then played it out for me live in person. Who here would like to see their exes pick up other people in front of you? Anyone? Anyone? Buller? Didn't think so. Let me tell you - it was NOT enjoyable.

Is this payback for something bad that I did? What the hell else can happen to me? For crying out loud........

In related news, I'm having a huge pity party for myself. Come on out and join me! I'll bring the chips and the depressing music!

Dang, where are Dorthy, Sophia, Rose and Blanche with a cheesecake when you need one?

BIGGEST sigh of the year................. SIGH.

And now - I'm done my rant.

- Kristin.

ps - I miss Susie. :(

From Mouseketeer to Academy Award Nominee

Written by Kristin

Zippity-do-dah!

Canadian actor/dreamboat, Ryan Gosling has been nominated for an Academy Award for BEST ACTOR for his role in Half Nelson. YAY!!! He's apparently the 1st Canadian since, like 1945 to be nominated for a Best Actor or Actress Award!

Ryan has come a long way.

I first saw him on my "childhood" tv show obsession - The Mickey Mouse Club. I followed his career to Young Hercules to the groundbreaking teen comedy "Breaker High" where he played player Sean Hanlon. Good stuff. He has been so fun to watch grow as an actor over the past 10 years. He's incredible! Need I mention The Notebook.

And daaaaaaaaaaaaang, that boy is looking good!!

Anyways, I just felt like expressing my happiness for Mr. Gosling. He has done Canada proud.

Locks of Love

Well, I've done it.

I've cut off 12 inches of my hair and DANG does it feel good.

I was in need of a change, in need of an actual hair STYLE (how insanely borning long straight hair can get). So, I decided to cut it all off. A few days ago I went to my wicked good hair dresser with some example photos, my camera and a brave heart. Hair was put into 2 braids and cut off. It felt amazing! An incredible weight has been lifted off my shoulders (literally).

It took no time for me to decide to ship the braids off to Locks of Love. I can't tell you how good it feels to give something to someone who will truly benefit from it (my hair will be made into wigs for kids with cancer).

I HIGHLY encourage anyone who has been hiding behind looooooooong hair to take the plunge - cut it off - send it off - make a little kid happy.

It's only hair.

It WILL grow back.

Hope everyone had/is still having a great holiday season!

Peace and love in 2007,
Ktan

Where the Lowest Price is the LAW

Written by Kristin

Ok.

New funniest thing ever.

Sooz, Carla and I were going to a movie at Grant Park (The Holiday - great flick). We were gonna meet earlier to grab tickets, then something to eat. Knowing Sooz as well as I do, I knew she was gonna suggest Pizza Place as our dining location that evening. Using that information, and the fact the Carla and Sooz are still getting to know each other so are in the being polite towards each other stage, I decided to plan a "joke".

Sooz met Carla and I at Grant Park, we bought our tickets (RED ticket).

I then said, "So, where are we gonna eat?".

Right on cue, Sooz said "Oo! How about Pizza Place?".

Then, said perfectly, Carla answered with a disappointed tone "oh... I was hoping we could eat at the Zeller's Family Diner...".

This was met with Sooz saying "oh, um, ok....", trying SUPER hard not to insult Carla's fine choice of eatery.

Laughter then came pouring out of Carla and I. Sooz then finally realized that we were pulling a fast one on her. TOOOOOOOOO funny. She was so defeated and it was HILARIOUS.

I have proceeded to suggest the Zellers Family Diner a few times in random emails and telephone conversations. Just tonight, I suggested it as a meeting place for Sooz and I tomorrow - AGAIN, she fell for it. One of these days we WILL eat at the Zellers Family Diner, as I'm sure it hosts top notch cusine.

On a related note - where is that Zellers teddy bear? Was his name Zeddy or Teddy Ruxpin? Did he get the boot when then started their "See how we're getting bettah and bettah" campaign? Sigh... he was a good bear. Always had the best deals in toyland.

10 days until CHRISTMAS!!!

Me? I want a Hula Hoop.

Written by Kristin

Snow.... baking.... presents.... eggnog.... candy canes.... chocolate advent calendars.... Santa.... trees.... Home Alone being played at least once a day on a different channel: 'tis the season.

Yes, I've had my tree up for 3 weeks already, but NOW it's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas. Snow on the ground, crazy shopping malls, 102 ClearFM playing all the Christmas hits (including Michael Bolton's savory rendition of O Holy Night).

I have loaned Sooz my Xmas tree and decorations and we spent this afternoon putting up the tree, decorating her place, drinking Gingerbread Lattes whilst listening to Christmas music. It was magical. The tree looks great and it has sufficiently gotten Sooz into the Christmas spirit (I've been in the spirit since July, let's face it).
Tonight we hung out with Carlidge (aka - Carla) at Joey's restaurant, as I had a "secret shopping gig". What fun it was to laugh and talk and drink wine and just be with good friends. I hope to do much more of that in the coming weeks. I encourage you all to spend as much time as you can with friends and family - and come to the King's Head on Dec. 22! Good times to be had!

Here are a few pictures from tonight. Don't we look classy (like, from an ad for the Keg, some might say??)

Secret to a great smile - extra teeth

So it has happened.

I have cut a sympathy-tooth in honour of my nephew.

...and I'm pretty much making this face right now, all the time. (not because of the tooth, just because)

I'm going to use it as a reference for how white my teeth should be, so that's good...

Don't judge a stroke by its symptoms

Written by Kristin

So, we had a scare a few weeks back with my dad. He had to be taken to the Emergency Room because of pains in his left arm (numbness and tingling). Not good. The doctor on call determined that he had a "mini stroke" and sent him for further testing to determine if surgery was needed.

Tests came back............ fine. Clear. No blockages in his arteries leading to his brain. Good news! So, what the heck then?

He went to a neurologist yesterday and he did an hour's worth of tests to determine that.... my dad is fine. He did not suffer a "mini stroke". My dad suffers from a pinched nerve in his neck. That's it. That's it! Pheeeeeeeeeeew! It took me a few minutes to believe the news (not that I wasn't ecastic that it wasn't a stroke!), but I just wanted to make sure it was true. And it is!

So, Tom is gonna be A-ok.

He can get back to his race-car driving in his Hyundai Elantra.

Watch out streets of Winnipeg!
